About Amenia Fire Company No. 1:
Amenia Fire Company No. 1 proudly protects 3000 people living in an area of 36 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. Our department, located in Dutchess County NY, was organized in November, 1895 after several fires in town. Hydrants were installed in the village, with rural areas depending on bucket brigades. A hook and ladder truck and a single cart were purchased by 1900, and the first motorized piece was bought around 1923, a Reo. In 1936 it was replaced by a Sanford. In 1941, the firehouse, which is connected with the town hall, burned. The truck was saved, and it was used to put the fire out with the help of neighboring towns. It was rebuilt on the same spot, and is the current structure today. Hopefully a new building will be in place soon. The department celebrated 100 years of 100% volunteer service to the town in 1995 with a year-long celebration. Dutchess County recently switched to an enhanced-911 operating emergency system. This has been a long and tedious process, however the results have been very positive. The fire departments were issued unique call numbers to identify their department. Starting with 31, these numbers were issued in alphabetical order. Our fire department number is 31 since Amenia is the first of the alphabetical order. We use this number to identify all cars, trucks, and rescue vehicles in the department. The Chiefs are identified by 31-1, 31-2, and 31-3. The Rescue Squad Captain is 31-7. The Lieutenants are 31-L1, 31-L2, and 31-L3. The Captain is 31-C1. The Engines are 31-15, 31-16, and 31-17. The Rescue Truck is 31-51. The Brush Trucks are 31-61 and 31-62. The Ambulance is 31-71. We use Mutual Aid from the following departments: Wassaic, Millerton, Millbrook, Dover, and Sharon, CT. We also use Northern Dutchess Paramedics for ALS assisted calls. We hope to continue serving the community as volunteers for the next 100 years!
