About Whakapapa Volunteer Fire Brigade:
Whakapapa Volunteer Fire Brigade "The Brigade with Altitude, 1200 mtrs" proudly protects up to 2500 people living in an area of approximately 600 square kilometers. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. Whakapapa Volunteer Fire Brigade is responsible for the villages of Whakapapa and Iwikau, both of which are located on the northern side of Mt. Ruapehu in the Tongariro National Park in New Zealand. Whakapapa village sits at approximately 1200 meters above sea level and is the main gateway for summer and winter recreational activities in and around the Tongariro National Park. Whakapapa village has several medium to large sized accommodation facilities (The Grand Chateau & The Skotel Alpine Resort) along with extensive staff accommodation for these establishments and the Whakapapa Ski Field facilities (Ruapehu Alpine Lifts, also know as RAL). Whakapapa Village also has a reticulated water supply. Iwikau Village sits at approximately 1650 meters above sea level, this is above the snowline during winter. In addition to the ski field facilities-ski rental, cafeterias, ski lifts, it also contains 47 lodges offering around 1600 beds, many of which are not accessible by vehicle. Each lodge is responsible for there own rain water collection and storage, these supplies are the only source of water as Iwikau village does not have a reticulated supply. Other risks include volcanic disruption, avalanches, a 4000 Ltr LPG tank and 2 small fuel stores (Whakapapa Village), 1 x 50,000 Ltr & 2 x 20,000 Ltr Diesel Tanks & 1 x 5000 Ltr Petrol Tank (Iwikau Village) a commercial airfield (With 7000 Ltrs of Aviation Fuel) and 4 educational/accommodation facilities situated nearby. Some Whakapapa Brigade members also serve as members of the St. John Ambulance Service and crew the ambulance stationed at Whakapapa as required. We are backed up by the National Park Volunteer Fire Brigade which is approximately 15 kms away, 3 additional volunteer fire brigades are within 50-60 kms distance. Some members of the National Park Fire Brigade work in and around Whakapapa Village so they also respond to the Whakapapa Station if there is a call out.
