About Allingtown Fire District:
Allingtown Fire District proudly protects 15000 people living in an area of 3.3 square miles. We operate out of Two stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status. This department started as a volunteer dept first in 1908. became paid in 1940 started with two paidmen one station. In 50's it had three paidmen w/a chief. today it is a 20 man dept w/ Chief, Deputy Chief Fire Marshal,(1)P/T Supt of apparatus.3 engines, one ladder quint, and one rescue unit w/ IV's. It is govern by board of fire commissioners elected by the taxpayers of the district. The Commissioners also set their own tax rate for the district to operate the fire department each year. Then this is voted by the taxpayers on the second Tuesday in the month of May. In this city we have three separate fire districts. The District Covers 3.3 Square Miles. Also in our District the department protects the University of New Haven.Which is known for it's Public Safety Program. This department will have a new firefighter in 1999 to add to our force. In January 2000 we added three new firefighters. This will bring the department to 24 men, including the Chief and Deputy Chief. The department works a forty - two hour week with four shifts, with six man on each shift. As of June 1 2000 to the present date we had 6 Firefighters retire. The taxpayers don't want to hire replacements, so we are working with five man shifts. Right now we are two men short on one shift. Also as of June 6, 2001 the district hired a Chief from the outside the first time in forty years, also the first African-American Chief. He was a Lieutenant for the New Haven Fire Department and retired from there in Feb. 1999.
