About West Glenville Volunteer Fire Company:
The West Glenville Volunteer Fire Company was established in 1944 and incorporated in 1949. The Company proudly protects some 1000 people in a slowly expanding population presently housed in 300 homes. There are no commercial establishments in the fire district, but there is a church of wooden construction. There are several large barns remaining from discontinued dairy farms. Also, one huge horse stabling and training facility. There are hydrants along three roads, with expansion expected. The bulk of our rural residential/agricultural area of 36 square miles, however, has minimal sources of water supply. Our ISO rating is '4/9.' Our Fire District is in the extreme northwest corner of Schenectady County, adjacent to Saratoga and Montgomery counties. Mail comes to District residents from either the Scotia or Amsterdam post office, and telephone service is through either the Schenectady or Amsterdam exchange, all of which is somewhat confusing to non-residents. 911 works efficiently, however, with all calls going to the Town of Glenville emergency dispatch center. Our Company is under the jurisdiction of the Board of Commissioners, Fire District #6, Town of Glenville. There are five commissioners. The District budget is currently in the range of $60-70,000. The Company is composed of male and female members, with 23 active and 7 inactive as of January 2003. There are no paid personnel. There is also an active Auxiliary of some 15 members. We operate out of a three bay, masonry station with a meeting room/office, kitchen, restrooms and an extension used for storage. All three of our trucks are engine-tankers. There is also a 1949 Ward LaFrance engine we use as a parade piece that is housed in a separate building. In addition to District funds raised through taxes, we conduct an annual fund drive in October. The proceeds are used to purchase equipment and a very little for social purposes. The Auxiliary also conducts fundraisers with which to purchase kitchen equipment and supplies, as well as refreshments served at calls. We have selective automatic mutual aid response to and from West Charlton Fire Company in Saratoga County as well as fellow Glenville companies Beukendaal and Glenville Hill.
