About Ridge Spring Volunteer Fire Department:
Ridge Spring Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects 2500 people living in an area of approximately 100 square miles. We operate out of one stations that protect a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. Located in southern Saluda County, South Carolina, the Ridge Spring Fire Department also serves portions of Aiken and Edgefield counties. This portion of South Carolina (situated on a fertile area known as The Ridge between Columbia, South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia) is widely known for its abundant summer peach crop. Although mainly agricultural, the Town of Ridge Spring has recently attracted several small industries that are supportive of the community and the fire department. As an example, Valley Protein of Winchester, Virginia was instrumental in the purchase of 5 supply line for our first-out engine. The 25 member Ridge Spring Fire Department was established by the Ridge Spring Town Council in 1951 and proudly earned an ISO Class 5 in 1997. Chief Arthur Kneece founded the first volunteer department which replaced farmer's tank trucks and long responses from neighboring towns. The Ridge Spring Fire Department operates out of the original station which is a converted 1950's jail. Due to lack of space, one engine and a tanker are housed at the Town's maintenance facility. Future plans include building a new station on land purchased with funds raised through donations and barbecue proceeds, but even with the help of our local industry this will be in the distant future.
