About Rico Volunteer Fire Department:
Rico Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects 214 people living in an area of 500 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. The Rico Volunteer Fire Department dates back as early as December 4, 1892 when its members responded to the Mc Junken Saw Mill Fire. Today the Rico Volunteer Fire Department responds to all Fire, EMS, and SAR calls in the eastern end of Dolores County. Rico is a historic mining town of 200 residents located in the southwestern corner of Colorado, at an elevation of 8827 feet. Although the town is small, our service area includes a thirty mile stretch of the popular San Juan Skyway scenic highway loop and lies just 30 miles south of Telluride and one hour from Mesa Verde National Park. We are responsible for over 500 square miles in the San Juan Natl Forest and Lizard Head Wilderness, which includes two 14,000 foot peaks, and more than 20 named peaks over 12,000 feet in elevation. Colorado Highway 145 is the only paved road in our service area. Our beautiful region is an increasingly popular destination for backcountry skiers, snowboarders, mountaineers, ice climbers, snowshoers, mountain bikers, backpackers, hikers, horseback outfitters, and for motorized recreationalists. Currently, DOW estimates that 3500 hunters and 1200 fisherman visit our county's mountains, lakes, and rivers each year. RVFD has assisted people in all these pursuits.
