About Pecan Grove Fire Department:
Pecan Grove Fire Department proudly protects 15000 people living in an area of 4 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a private department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status. Established in 1982, with 5 founding members, purchased one acre of land on the southern end of a quickly growing subdivision and began construction on a 4 bay two story fire station. Purchased a 1961 Mack commercial 5 man pumper (which was sold sadly for $500 dollars to a neighboring dept. in 1988), in 1985 purchased a Chevy Step van for rescue. Membership began growing and we began organizing our annual fund raiser five miles my way, a course was mapped out throughout the subdivision where participants could run, walk, bike, skate or whatever they wanted and win small mostly donated prizes. T-shirts were custom designed with silk screen artwork and sponsors listed on back, which are a pretty hot commodity. In 1985, it was decided to purchase another pumper and in 1986 a local historical fire truck restorer and Houston fire man was comitioned to rebuild a commercial pumper and upgrade it to modern and some custom specs. Now we are a 3 truck station with 2 pumpers and a rescue truck. The first engine, E-21, New (to us) E-22 and R-20, when the station was being built E-21 was generously stationed at nearby (and ultimately at that time responsible for and first responder to our district) Richmond Fire Dept. In 1988, it was decided to purchase a Tanker/ pumper truck new with custom specs... 4 Guys got the nod, then Chief Curtis Brown made the trip home from Pa. with our first new pumper/ tanker, T-21. E-21, after many repairs in it's years with us, was committed to be sold and placed out of service. R-19, our ems/ personel carrier, was purchased and this is how our apparatus stand now. In the near future, the new truck fund should be spent, possibly on a name brand Quint or engine.. We shall see. Kathy Golden one of the founding members with 10 yrs previous fire/ ems expirience has been Chief since the inseption of our dept., with the exception of one year in 1987 when she lost the election to Curtis Brown. In the following elections Kathy was again elected Chief and appointed Curtis to Fire Marshall position. Larry Bownds, now Asst. Chief and founding member is obviously still active, also founding members Curtis Brown, current Fire Marshall, and John Grillo, current Captain, are also still active. We have currently 4 paramedics (employed with County 911 ems), 10 emt's and 4 eca's, certified fire instructors, ems instructors and active participation in state/ county and area firefighter/ ems/ instructor societies and associations. We currently have about 20 active members, with 5 part time paid from the membership and 6 form outside departments. This program was started in '86 with the hours of coverage by paid personel on duty from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm, these hours were extended in '91 to 11:00pm and we hope to go to 24hr coverage in early '99, staffed mostly by members of PGFD. Part time paid members are required to have current minimum ECA cert. and Basic FF cert. to qualify for part time duty. We are not a taxing entity, we have a voluntary donation from the monthly water bill of six dollars, which has approx. 90% participation, one of our main sources of income, along with our annual fund raiser.
