About Nokomis Fire Department:
Nokomis Fire Department proudly protects 13000 people living in an area of 33 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. The Nokomis Fire Department was established in April 1949. we currently have 35 members in the department and respond to approx. 1100 calls a year. The Nokomis Fire Department is soly supported by donations from the area we serve. Our operating budget for 1998 is $344,000.00. We currently have 4 Engines, 1 Tanker, 1 support unit, 1 Brush truck, 1 Air Trailer, 1 50' Tele Squirt and 3 staff vehicles. The Nokomis Fire Department is Volunteer, but is staffed 24 hours a day with a minimum of (2) firefighters.We also provide First responder EMS for Sarasota County Fire Department which provides ALS within the Nokomis Fire Area. The majority of the members of the Nokomis Fire department are Minimum Standards qualified and EMT's. In April of 1999 the Nokomis Fire Department celebrated its 50th year of service with the opening of its Training facility equipted with a 2-1/2 story fire facilities training tower along with a vehicle fire prop, a lake for drafting, LPG props, and an extrication pad. In 2000 we will be renivating the training class room and adding a confined space and hose maze props. Traing is the key to the Nokomis Fire Departments success.
