About Natchez Fire Department:
Natchez Fire Department proudly protects 35356 people living in an area of 438 square miles. We operate out of four stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a paid status. The Natchez Fire Department is the oldest chartered fire department in the State of Mississippi. It was chartered Febuary 19, 1819. It became a fully paid department in Febuary of 1948. It is now lead by Chief Paul Johnson who has been with the dept. for over 26 yrs. and served as chief since Nov, 2002. The dept. has a deputy chief, three shift commanders, and station captains to run the daily activities. It has a full time training officer and fire marshal. The staff officers work eight hour days and line firefighters work 24 and 48. We run five 1500 gpm pumpers, a 110 ft. ladder truck, a rescue unit, and commander vehicle out of four stations. We also run a 23 foot rescue boat in the Mississippi river and two smaller boats for lakes and ponds. We have a class four fire rating from the Miss. State Rating Bureau. We are one of the few states that are not ISO rated. This is the second best rating in the state with only Jackson, the capitol city having a class three.
