We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status. Located on Santa Catalina Island the Avalon Fire Department is a City Fire Department. We have one station and 8 fulltime uniform personell. We work closely with Los Angeles County Fire Department and the Los Angeles County Fire/Lifeguard Department. Our police protection is contracted with Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department and they have a sub station in the city. Our primary response area is the 1.5 square miles of the incorporated town of Avalon, however we have an automatic aid agreement with Los Angeles County Fire and Paramedic service as they do with us. We have the only Ambulance Service on the Island and respond into the unicorporated areas, the major part of the Island, when requested or as SOP depending on the location of the incident. Our Volunteers are 25 strong and are alerted by an air raid siren on top of one of the hills in town. All fulltime personnel and officers on the Volunteer force are EMT's. We also have trained EMT-D's on the department as well as our Harbor Department.
