About Mehlville Fire Protection District:
Mehlville Fire Protection District proudly protects 200000 people living in an area of 52 square miles. We operate out of 7 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a paid status. Dating to the early 1930's, the Mehlville Volunteer Fire Department officially chartered with the State of Missouri in 1935. Early on they operated a 1925 Ford Model T equipped with a farm style irrigation pump. They later obtained a 1919 American LaFrance pumper from the St. Louis Fire Department. It was destroyed in an accident in 1939. As a result, Mehlville purchased its first new pumper in 1940 (see photo below). The all-volunteer force functioned until 1953 when voters approved the formation of the Mehlville Fire Protection District. Encompassing an area of approximately forty-seven square miles, there were two part-time paid positions, supplemented by the volunteers. In 1957, a bond issue was passed and as a result three new stations were built and staffed by a total of eighteen paid firefighters and a fire chief. Today the District has approximately 150 employees operating from seven stations, protecting nearly 200,000 people living in a 52 square mile area. The firefighters and paramedics operate seven engine companies (including a pair of 75' quints) a heavy rescue, a 100' aerial platform, five Advanced Life Support ambulances and a host of other staff and support units. All of the uniformed staff, including the Chief Officers, are members of IAFF Local 1889. NOTE: This information is submitted by Dennis J. Maag and is not an official site of the Mehlville Fire Protection District.
