About Southwest Rural Fire Protection District:
Southwest Rural Fire Protection District proudly protects approx. 10000 people living in an area of approx. 90 square miles. We operate out of 3 stations that protect a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. The district was formed in 1962 to provide fire protection to the area of Lancaster County directly southwest of the city of Lincoln. This also includes the incorporated villages of Denton and Sprague and the unincorporated villages of Rokeby, Martell, Yankee Hill, and part of Emerald. Major highways in the district are Interstate 80, US Highways 6 & 77 and Nebraska Highways 2 & 33. Also included are the Burlington Northern Santa Fe RR.'s mainlines heading west and south and the Union Pacific's mainline heading south from their yards in Lincoln. Major commercial properties include a Williams Bros. Pipeline terminal, The Bedient Pipe Organ Co., a major truck stop, many varied retail establishments & several grain eleavator & farm supply companies. Also located in the Southwest Fire District are two large religious complexes, the Mother House and Convent for the Villa Regina Order, which is halfway between Lincoln and Denton and the Our Lady of Guadalupe Seminary, under construction just east of Denton. In 1996, Southwest Rural upgraded from a QRT type EMS service to supplying BLS transport.
