About La Plata Volunteer Fire Department:
La Plata Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects 20000 people living in an area of 72 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. In 1929,Our department was established because of a big tire fire in the middle of the town of La Plata that required the services of a fire brigade. At this time there was none and the closest department was the District of Columbia Fire Department, it took Engine Co. 25 55 minutes to responded to La Plata from Southeast, Washington. The fire was quickly contained and no damage was done to the town. We were the first organized department in Charles County. We ran calls for Charles, St. Mary's and Prince Georges counties. Our department consists of sixty active and non-active members which provide twenty-four hour emergency services protection to the citizens of Charles County.
