About East Central Volunteer Fire Department:
East Central Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects 10000 people living in an area of 254 square miles. We operate out of 4 stations that protect a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status.

East Central Civil Defense Firefighting Unit was changed to East Central Volunteer Fire Dept and was organized in May 1963. Our first apparatus was a 1959 Ford 1-1/2 ton, which had a John Bean Royal 55 high pressure pump from a 1936 fire truck which was county owned. The county donated $250.00 for the first several years. The first year expenditure was $68.70, and the 2nd year (1st year of dept) was $591.02 and the income was $742.02. 1997 expenditures was over $95,700. Each of the three substations land was donated and the building were purchased and erected by donated funds. East Central was the first volunteer fire department in Jackson County to acquire the Jaws of Life. This equipment was also purchased solely with donated funds. After years of working toward a insurance rating, East Central VFD and Three Rivers VFD (neighboring community) joined together and formed the Northeast Jackson County Fire Grading District. March 18, 1998, these unique men and women achieve a Class 8 rating from that of a 10 rating. Both departments have a Automatic Aid agreement with one-another. Average structure calls are: 6 minutes on response; 18 firefighters; 4 pumpers and 5 tankers.
