About Homewood Fire and Rescue Service:
Homewood Fire and Rescue Service proudly protects 24500 people living in an area of 8.3 square miles. We operate out of 3 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a paid status. Founded in 1926, The Homewood Fire and Rescue Service is a proffesional organization that strives for the excellence in all aspects of the today's fire service. Homewood's Emergency Medical Services are among the best around. Homewood employs 36 FireMedics, 3 EMT Intermediates, and 28 EMT Basics. The Paramedics and Intermediates are all credentialed for the use of State Advanced Life Support Protocols. Homewood medics are provided with some of the most advanced medical devices available for prehospital use. These important assets are used in striving for excellence in E.M.S. Homewood also has excellent fire protection services. Some of the most up-to-date firefighting equipment is employed by Homewood. This includes the use of an infra-red imaging system. This device allows our firefighters to discover fires that may be hidden, or otherwise overlooked. All apparatus is loaded with 5 hose. This allows our firefighters to get the maximum amount of water to and on a fire. These, and more equipment, are vital to striving for excellence in fire protection. Homewood's fire prevention bureau is an icon for the fire prevention community. In an effort to provide this excellent service, Homewood utilizes a professionally trained arson detecting K-9. Sadie a laborador retriever, is available 24 hours a day for use in detecting fires caused by arson. She is available to not only the City of Homewood, but to other departments in Central Alabama. The City of Homewood relies on the latest technology in providing public safety and increasing efficiency. As most people know, the development of the 911 dispatch system has played a vital role in saving lives and property. Homewood realizes this fact also. In this realization, Homewood became the first city in Jefferson County to implement the Enhanced 911 Dispatch System. Since this implementation, the city receives approximataly 1,450 911 calls per month. In lieu of this, the Dispatch Center was upgraded in 1996. A state-of-the-art dispatch system is now employed by the city. A system of this magnitude does not come cheap. For example, in 1998, Homewood spent $1,000,000 on one of the best Computer Aided Dispatch Systems available- the Intergraph Public Safety CAD System. Many variables and a lot of money are needed to obtain and maintain this high quality system of dispatch. Below is a list of some of these variables :1. 5- 911 Trunk Lines 2. 4- 911 Answering Positions 3. 11- Combination Fire/Police Dispatchers 4. Telco 1100 911 System 5. Meridian Telephone System 6. Dictaphone Prolog Digital Recording System 7. Orbicon Touch Screen radio system. This system controls all electric door entrances, and the Civil Defense sirens. The Dispatch Center can activate these sirens individually or in unison. As mentioned above, the development of this system was expensive, as well as time consuming. However, Homewood feels that it has paid a small price in the quest to save lives and property. Homewood's citizens are very proud of their department and they appreciate the many services that the Homewood Fire and Rescue Service provides.
