About Harrison Fire Department:
Harrison Fire Department proudly protects 11000 people living in an area of 12.5 square miles. We operate out of 2 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status.

The City of Harrison and the members of the Harrison Fire Department are dedicated to the saving of life and property from the perils of fire, while providing the highest quality emergency medical services, and means of fire prevention through education, to all who call upon us in their time of need. On February 10, 1881, the residents of the village of Harrison, Ohio created their first fire department, which was known at that time as the Washington Fire Department. In the early 1900's, the Washington Fire Department was accepted by the Harrison Village Council as a municipal fire department and was renamed the Harrison Fire Department. The City of Harrison currently has a 42 member fire department which utilizes 2 stations housing 2 engines, 1 85' aerial tower, and 1 fire rescue unit. The city's fire department is assisted by Harrison Township, as they supply 1 engine,1 water tanker and 1 off road brush fire unit. The fire department additionally provides emergency medical assistance at the EMT-I level utilizing 4 life squad units staffed by 20 intermediate or advanced EMTs, and 18 bridged EMTs. Harrison Fire Department EMTs services are assisted by the Western Joint Ambulance District Paramedics on situations where advanced life support is necessary. The Western Joint Ambulance District (WestJAD) is supported by a tax payer approved levy, which covers 5 political subdivisions and 4 fire departments in western Hamilton County. Additional services provided by the fire department include a division of fire prevention which is responsible for providing fire and life safety to our residents as they shop among the estimated 485 shops or stores located in our community and township. As well as provide free smoke detectors including installation if required to needy families in the Harrison area. A division of public education is also provided to deal with circumstances which indicate a need for educational growth in the areas of safety from the perils of fire. This division additionally provides tours of Harrison Fire Department facilities along with various other services for community groups as requested. The Harrison Fire Department also offers an Explorer program to familiarize young people between the ages of 16 and 18 in the day to day activities of Firefighter/EMTs. Some persons from this group have gone on to become very good employees of the Harrison Fire Department. The Harrison Fire Department employs 16 full time persons and 26 part time bringing the total to 42 persons, most of which are also available for off duty responses to assist in the larger incidents. Both of our two stations are staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The administrative and command staffs include the Fire Chief and the Assistant Fire Chief, a Captain and 2 Lieutenants for each of the Harrison Fire Stations, and a Captain and 2 Lieutenants for the Division of Emergency Medical Services. The full time shifts are led by 3 duty officers, one assigned to each of the 3 unit days. The Harrison Fire Department currently maintains a rating of Class IV from the Insurance Services Organization of Ohio for fire protection. The Harrison Fire Department is additionally involved in many more community interest programs which would be too numerous to mention in this profile. Alan R. Kinnett, Fire Chief and Director of Harrison's Fire and Emergency Medical Service Alan Kinnett began his services in the City of Harrison's fire department on December 11, 1971. One year later in December of 1972, he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant, by former Fire Chief Irvin Wright. He served as lieutenant over the next six years until the fall of 1978 when he was promoted to the position of Assistant Fire Chief. On February 13, 1979, Alan was appointed to the position of Fire Chief by Mayor Harry A. Rolfes. The position of Fire Chief was considered a part-time employment opportunity at that time and continued as such until November 1, 1997. On that date Alan became the first full time Fire Chief in Harrison's history. Over the 19 plus years that Chief Kinnett has served, many significant changes have taken place in the city's division of Fire and Emergency Medical Services. Among the more notable would be the expansion of the Emergency Medical Service program from one Cadillac ambulance staffed by First Aid personnel to its current fleet of four state of the art Type III Emergency Medical Service Squads. Also, the Chief has seen the department expand to two stations containing 3 engines, 1 aerial truck, 1 heavy rescue, 1 water tanker, 1 brush fire unit, and 5 staff vehicles. The department has also progressed from a volunteer department to it's current staffing levels of 16 full time personnel and 26 part time personnel, allowing the Chief to provide 24 hours a day, seven days a week coverage in both stations covering 25 square miles. Chief Kinnett currently resides in the City of Harrison along with his wife, Jean, where they have raised three children, Diana, Jeff and Mike who have now provided them with six grandchildren. The Chief loves the outdoors and loves fishing and camping and hopes to retire someday soon to provide adequate time to pursue his love for the outdoors.
