combination of paid and volunteer status. The Hamden Fire Dept. consists of an career staff of 92 firefighters of which 23 are on duty at all times. The on duty staff operates out of 5 stations, they operate 5 engines, 1 ladder truck, 2 rescue trucks and a battalion chief. Each rescue is staffed with a paramedic that can provide advanced life support services.In addition to the on duty staff, volunteers staff 2 engines, a mini-pumper, and 3 brush trucks. We protect a population of approx. 52,000 people in a mostly residential area. Many of the buildings in town are of the multiple occupancy type. Other hazards include, a large retail shopping strip, many light commercial and industrial buildings, an Amtrak rail line, a state highway and Sleeping Giant State Park, which due to its many cliffs and ledges is responsible for many mountain rescues each year.
