About Coates Bend Volunteer Fire-Rescue:
Coates Bend Vol. Fire Rescue proudly protects three thousand people living in an area of thirty-two square miles. We operate out of one (1) stations that protect a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status.

Coates Bend Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1977. The Departments coverage area is mostly a rural farming community in northeastern Etowah County, Alabama. The Coates Bend community is nestled in the mist of many fields and wooded areas. The coverage area encompasses south to The City of Gadsden and north to the Cherokee County line. The Coosa River flows through the community producing a natural southeastern boundry for the coverage area. The northwestern border includes thirteen miles of Lookout Mountain and Owls Hollow. These two areas provide interesting wildland fire fighting tactics. Coates Bend Fire also provides coverage for Gaston School, the only K-12 grade school in Etowah County. Six miles of US Highway 411 travels through Coates Bend's coverage area. The Coates Bend and Gaston Community continues to grow in population, residental dwellings, and even businesses, while the farming slightly decreases. Currently Coates Bend Fire Rescue has sixteen active members. The Department is under the leadership of Chief Jeff Sauls and Assistant Chief Keith Mitchell. Don Clements is Chairman of the Board. Chief Sauls has served The Department since 1978 and as Chief since 1988. He was responsible for starting the Emergency Medical Services program at Coates Bend and is a paramedic. The Department's meeting and training oppurtunities are on the first and third Monday's of the month at 18:30 hours. The Coates Bend Volunteer Fire Department continues to strive to be the best one can to the benefit for the community in which we serve.
