About Edgewood fire DepartmentEdgewood fire Department:
Edgewood Fire Department proudly protects 3500 people living in an area of 1.8 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a combination of paid and volunteer status. The Edgewood Fire Department was formed in the late 1880's as a full time paid department, in 1968 the department went to a combo paid and volunteer department. The Edgewood Fire Department and the Edgewood Police Department share the same quarters and dispatch center. We run three 8 hour tours, staffed by a paid firefighter/dispatcher. This type of system works well in our community. We receive all emergency call via phone line or through Eastern Regional 911 Center. We log each call and send appropriate units. In case of a fire department activation we set off our pagers, hit the whistle, call in an officer to man the dispatch desk and respond with the apparatus to the scene where we are met with the volunteer crews. Each volunteer member carries their own gear with them. This type of responce guarentees a quick and speedy responce. Our responce time is under two minutes anywhere within our borough. We are surrounded by the boroughs of Wilkinsburg, Swissvale, and the City of Pittsburgh. We are a small close nit community with tree lined streets, and good community spirit. The Norfolk and Southern Railroad main line (formally Conrail)runs in the middle of our town splitting it into two sectors east and west. We are capable of handling all sorts of emergencys from public service details and fire education and provention to structure fires,MVA's, And Hazmat calls. We are also responsable for handeling State route 376 East the Parkway that runs from the PA turnpike to Pittsburgh. We handle from the Wilkinsburg/Forest Hills exit to the Squirrel Hill tunnels in both directions. With the assistance of the City of Pittsburgh, Swissvale, Wilkinsburg.fire departments. We are a mutial aid company that assists Swissvale, Braddock Hills, Forest Hills, and Rankin. Our district is primary residential, we also have a large strip mall called Edgewood Towne Center that is comprised of 29 retail shops and national chain stores such as K-Mart, Giant Eagle, Phar Mor, NRM, Eat-N-Park, Wendy's and Applebee's.
