About East Providence Fire Department:
The East Providence Fire Department proudly protects 48,688 (2000 Census) citizens living in an area of 16.5 square miles. The firefighters operate out of 4 stations that protect a heavy mix of residential, commercial and industrial occupancies.

The East Providence Fire Department was organized 1877, with its first paid members starting in 1911. The Department grew to 135 paid members in the late 1960's, before being scaled back to its present day 119 full-time members. The Department responded on 10,094 calls in 2005. It has an ISO Rating of 3. The Department presently runs with 5 Engine Companies (staffed with an Officer and 2 Firefighters), 2 Ladder Companies (staffed with an Officer and a Firefighter), and 3 ALS Rescues (staffed with 2 Firefighter/EMT-C's). The Battalion Chief on duty brings the minimum manning to 26 people. The Special Hazards Truck is run as a tag-along with either Engine 1 or Engine 5. All Engine Companies carry Automatic External Defibrillators and crew members can start IV's and administer cardiac medications, and have the capability to establish direct communications with any local hospital. The City of East Providence encompasses an area of 16.5 square miles - 13.3 square miles of land and 3.2 square miles of inland water. The shoreline measures 14.4 miles. The Department has two 18-foot boats which are placed into the water during the entire boating season, and keeps two 13-foot zodiacs at the ready year-round. The Department protects 40 Schools and Day Care centers, 28 Churches, 18 Extra Hazardous Substance Facilities, 16 Group Homes, 13 Nursing Homes, 12 Residential High-Rises, 1 Hospital, 2 Emergency Room Facilities, and 3 Gasoline Storage Facilites. East Providence has the largest percentage of elderly residents of any city or town in the State of Rhode Island.
