About Devens Fire Department:
Devens Fire Department proudly protects 3500 people living in an area of 34 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily industrial area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a paid status. The Devens Fire Department proudly protects the community of 3,500 people living and working in the 28 square mile area. The public department operates out of one station with a team of 23 individuals, two engines, one ladder truck, one rescue vehicle and two forestry units. The department is trained in the latest techniques of firefighting, including medical services, rescue, Haz-Mat, confined space, fire prevention and inspection. After serving as the Army's New England Headquarters for 79 years, Fort Devens was closed in 1996. With the endorsement of the voters in the host towns of Ayer, Harvard and Shirley, and the approval of the state Legislature and former Governor William F. Weld, the property was conveyed to MassDevelopment, a quasi-public real estate and economic development agency, tasked with stimulating economic investment across Massachusetts. The former federal fire department was transferred to the MassDevelopment on May 12, 1996.
