The VAMC Coatesville Medical Center Fire Department is the largest full paid fire service unit in Chester County, PA. It is staffed by fifteen (15) career Federal Firefighter and Officers assigned to three (3) platoons, each working 24 hours on, and 48 hours off. In addition to suppression duties, the fire department personnel provide other emergency and non-emergency services to the Medical Center. Services include: 1. Monthly written inspections of all buildings on station. 2. Quarterly testing of sprinkler systems, including flow tests, tamper switches, and PIV's. 3. Testing of all devices of the fire alarm system twice annually. 4. Performing semi-annual flushing and annual flow testing and lubrication of all fire hydrants on station. 5. Perform monthly inspection and annual servicing of all fire extinguishers. 6. Conduct one fire drill per quarter per shift per floor in all patient occupied buildings; conduct semi-annual drills per floor in all other buildings. Total for year was 313. 7. Provide Hazardous Materials response for the facility. 8. Operate the facility hot work permit program. 9. Perform elevator rescues. 10. Perform confined space rescues. 11. Provide fire safety training to other Medical Center staff (1341 individuals were trained in 183 sessions). 12. Provide on-station ambulance transport and medical emergency response. 13. Respond to all Engineering Service calls during non-administrative hours (904).
