We operate out of 2 stations that protect a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. Southeast Fire Department was chartered back in 1975 by citizens concerned with the lack of adequate fire protection in their community. Our original chartered name was Mt. Carmel V.F.D. since this was the Community where the station was located. People in the south end of our district were confused and did not think we served them due to the name and location of the station. So in 1986 we applied for a new charter name under Southeast V.F.D. which better discribed the area we covered. The name came about because we are in the extreme Southeast corner of Pearl River County. With a lot of hard work and dedication, we have come a long way from the old army truck with the leaking water tank and no brakes, to a modern Fire Department that we are very proud of. None of our accomplishments could have been possible without the support of YOU, the CITIZENS that live in our District, most who know us on a personal level. We at Southeast, TAKE FIREFIGHTING VERY SERIOUSLY, and do not consider it A GAME to run around with red lights on and blowing sirens. All Firefighters ARE REQUIRED to be CERTIFIED within one year of joining the Department through the State Fire Academey in Jackson. After this, we REQUIRE ALL Firefighters to Train 3 hours a month, a requirement of the State. All Firefighters are then REQUIRED to come to the Station and work 1 hour per week doing anything that needs to be done to keep the station and equipment in excellent working order to respond at a moments notice. All the work done is kept in a log book with what was done and the time spent doing it. As you can see, there is a lot of hard work and dedication that goes into being a Volunteer Firfighter, it is not just going out on Emegency Calls. But it is all worth while seeing the gratatude on the faces of the people that we help in their time of need. We will continue to grow and look at new ways to make our Department better. We have found through experience that a well trained, smooth running Department, means better fire protection for everyone, plus lower Homeowners Premiums and better moral throughout the Department and the Community. Southeast Fire Department is run by 5 Fire Board Members who are bonded and oversee all financial purchases under advisement from the Chief on Departmental needs. No Firemen, not even the Chief, has any direct access to any money whatsoever. All purchases and decisions concerning the Department must have a majority vote of the Board and all checks must be signed by 2 Board Members. Board meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the Month @ 8:00 PM and Firefighter Training Meetings are on the last Tuesday of the Month @ 7:00 PM.
