About Carlton Fire/Ambulance:
Carlton Fire/Ambulance proudly protects 4000 + people living in an area of 350 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. In the late 1880’s, Northern Pacific Junction had five stores, four hotels, and eight saloons. This village had grown from 27 people in 1870 to 612 in 1890 and now needed some form of fire protection. At a Saturday meeting on August 18, 1888, thirty-nine men signed on as members of the Northern Pacific Junction Fire Company. On Wednesday, August 22, 1888 a committee on permanent organization was set up. This document was signed by prominent leaders in the area including Henry Oldenburg, a lawyer who later had Oldenburg Point in Jay Cooke State Park named after him. By-laws for the department were soon adopted. An interesting part of the by-laws state that if a member did not attend a meeting the fine would be fifty cents. If an individual did not respond to a call the fine doubled to a dollar. Given the era, this was considered a great deal of money and demonstrates the importance of the organization. Ordinance 11 created the Village of Northern Pacific Junction Fire Company on February 7, 1891. Only two months passed and on April 15, 1891 Northern Pacific Junction became the Village of Carlton. It was at this time that John Flynn became the first Fire Chief of the Carlton Fire Department. Horse drawn and man powered hose carts were used to extinguish fires at that time. The current department still maintains one of these carts today for display. The first fire truck came in the form of a 1919 Ford Model T serial # 3628191. This truck was made into a fire truck by the Cloquet Fire Department. It did not have a pump and relied on hydrant pressure to fight fires. It carried 1500 feet of hose along with several large fire extinguishers. It is still used today in parades and demonstrations. The second truck was a 1936 Chevrolet. The third truck was a 1952 Ford manufactured by General Fire Company. It had a 750 gpm pump and a 500 gallon water tank. This was the first white truck and all have been white in color since. This truck was sold to the Ore Fire Department in 1980. The next truck was a 1968 Ford made by General Fire Company. It was capable of pumping 1000gpm and had a tank capacity of750 gallons. This truck was traded in to General Fire in 1997. This leads us to the current fleet of vehicles now in use. The first ambulance was put into service in 1968 and was a station wagon chassis. The best word to describe it was tight! The first ambulance run came on September 24, 1968 and was a nursing home transfer. Currently we run two type III ambulances with a BLS service. The fire hall has had many transitions throughout the years. The current hall was dedicated on September 24, 1987. The design allows three full service bays in which two pumpers, two ambulances, a 3100 gallon tanker, and grass rig are located. There is also an area for half court basketball. A large meeting/training room, kitchen, male and female locker rooms with showers, bunk area, lounge area and hose tower account for the rest of the building. Members of the department enjoy privileges like a warm area to wash and work on their own vehicles, free garbage disposal, cable television, and several social functions dedicated to their commitment of volunteer service. Dedication to duty and the belief that as one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world for one person, are the strengths of our service. We continue to be loyal to our duty.
