About Calvert Volunteer Fire Department:
Calvert Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects 2000 people living in an area of 50 square miles. We operate out of one stations that protect a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. The Calvert Volunteer Fire Department proudly serves the citizens of Calvert home of Texas's Third Largest Historic District and surrounding areas of Robertson County since 1870. The department was created to protect what at that time was a booming railroad community as well as the forth largest city in Texas. It was said that during the late 1800's up to the mid 1940's that no Texas town of this size had better fire protection. The department fell of hard times during the latter half of the century due to the rising cost of fire equipment and a lack of adequate funding. With the creation of the Robertson County Rural Fire Prevention District in 2001 the department has florished and has been able to purchase new fire equipment and provide training for its members. In the past year the department has more than doubled in members and in May purchased a used 1981 American LaFrance 1500 G.P.M. Engine that was restored and repainted by the members of the department. The City of Calvert seeing the improvements in the department agreed to purchace a 2003 Ford F-550 Brush / Rescue / Attack Truck to aid the department. The department expects to continue its expantion and improvement in 2003 while operating on a budget of $32,000 dollars through which we plan to purchace new bunker gear for all members, S.C.B.A.s, training, as well as many other much needed items.
