We operate out of 3 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a paid status. Bremerton's fire department was established in 1902. It operates the only public full-time paid department in Kitsap County. It's first hand operated fire cart arrived on December 20, 1902. A fire bell was intalled in 1904. Mounted in a tower, the 595 pound bell called out firefighters and citizens alike. Before the bell arrived, the alert had been delivered by firing gunshots into the air. The Bremerton Fire Department hired its first six paid firefighters in 1921, after it was discovered that many of the volunteers were loaning equipment to citizens, removing it from circulation for fire department use. Bremerton has an older central core that is being renovated as new occupancies open up. Approximately 18 years ago, development in other parts of the county dried up Bremerton's downtown business district. Lately however, there has been a turnaround in this trend due to a commitment by the city and property owners to renovate downtown buildings and upgrade the waterfront area. Over $3 million has been spent to build a new boardwalk and marina. There is also a $100 million dollar public/private partnership to upgrade an eight square block area of downtown Bremerton. This is envisioned to include a transportation center with a new Washington State ferry terminal, a municipal parking garage, streets, plazas with a housing and business center, retail businesses, restaurants, a movie complex and expanded marina.
