About Bethany Volunteer Fire Department / Ambulance Corps:
Bethany Volunteer Fire Department / Ambulance Corps proudly protects 4800 people living in an area of 21 square miles. We operate out of 2 stations that protect a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status. The Bethany Volunteer Firemen's Association was established in 1934. There are two stations housing four engines, two tanker/pumpers,one tanker, a rescue truck, a brush truck, and two ambulances we now have 65 dedicated professional volunteers on staff who serve 1300 homes, 50 businesses, 2 churches, 2 schools, and 3 state roads. In addition we have mutual aid agreements with Hamden, Prospect, Woodbridge, Beacon Falls, and Seymour. In the entire town of Bethany there are only 14 Fire hydrants and only 2 of them are pressurized. The other 12 are dry hydrants which makes structural firefighting much more difficult, we have over 11,000 gallons of water on wheels and end up doing a tanker shuttle evolution at most structure fires. Firefighter Michael Hanley has been instrumental in obtaining underground fire suppression water tanks in the towns newer sub-divisions. These tanks greatly improve the fire protection in these areas. The Ambulance Corps is by far the busiest of our services. All members of the ambulance are trained to a minimum of MRT most are EMT's and we have 4 EMT-I's who can provide some forms of advanced life support. All Ambulance personnel are trained to use our 3 Physio-Control A.E.D's.
