About Berlin Township Fire Department of Berlin Center, Ohio:
Berlin Township Fire & Rescue proudly protects 2240 people living in an area of 25 square miles. We operate out of 1 station that protects a primarily rural area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status.

During the spring and early summer of 1947, our township suffered a great loss of property due to fire. As the township had no fire protection, it was decided by some of the people of the township to try to organize a fire department, buy some equipment, and furnish protection to the residents of Berlin Center. Several meetings were held and the Berlin Township Volunteer Fire Department was organized. The first offcial meeting was held on July 16, 1947. Forty-six men attended this meeting at which plans were made to try to raise funds for the purchase of a truck and some equipment. We decided to solicit the township residents for financial donations. This idea was soon abandoned due to some very sharp criticism from some residents. After sevral meetings with the township trustees it was decided that the trustees would purchase the truck and equipment. This was paid from the township's general fund without any raise in taxes, and in fact, the protection given by the fire department substantially reduced the fire insurance rate in the township. We eagerly awaited the arrival of our truck, which was past the delivery date. When the truck arrived in September we were already for it and were in the midst of a fireman's training course. We had our first and second calls during this coures. The first was a grass fire and the second a building fire which we extinguished with the aid of our instructor. That all happened over 50 years ago and we are still going strong with 27 active members and with the support of are residents and trustees. The Berlin Township Volunteer Fire Department is always ready and willing to come to your aid in any emerency at a moments notice and still offers this service free of charge.
