The Athens Volunteer Fire Department is finally in their new station and will be responding from there as of Monday November 24, 2003.
Athens Volunteer Fire Department proudly protects 2500 people living in an area of 10 square miles. We operate out of 1 stations that protect a primarily residential area. Our department is a public department whose members are on a volunteer status.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING On May 4, 2002, three fire companies in the Village of Athens made an unprecedented step in the County of Greene when they became the Athens Volunteer Fire Department, Inc. Prior to this time they were known individually as the W. C. Brady Hook and Ladder Company #1 (founded in 1858), W. H. Morton Engine Company (founded in 1871) and the Makawomuc Engine Company #3 (founded in 1859). In these sometimes trying and unpredictable times, unity has become a goal to strive for in this organization. This merger has been in the planning stages for almost two years and is setting an example for the rest of the County. These officers as well as their members are truly excited that after 20 years or better of planning, hoping, and re-planning, a single building will soon be housing all of the apparatus and equipment further uniting their spirit. Ground was broken on July 14, 2002, for the new firehouse on Third Street and completion is expected before the end of the year.
Reunion:
A major tragedy was averted on a Sunday night when a team of Athens Firefighters rescued a 4 year-old girl trapped inside a burning house at 33 Thorpe Road. Chief Ryan Schrader commended the following six firefighters; Capt. Ray Williams, Lt. James Robinson , firefighter Steven Goger, firefighter Wayne ButterWorth, First Asst. Chief Andrew Lubera, and firefighter Dale Lubera.
