About Elephant Head Volunteer Fire Department:
The Elephant Head Volunteer Fire Department (EHVFD), a tax-exempt, non-profit corporation, has been providing fire and EMS services to the Elephant Head, Amado/Arivaca Junction, and Lakewood communities since 1994. The EHVFD service area encompasses 28 square miles. Included within the service area is federal, state, county and private property. There are no public water systems equipped with fire hydrants or other fire flow sources of water. Within the service area are 44 miles of paved state/county roads, 15 miles of unpaved roads, 5 miles of interstate highway, 28 miles of federal/state backcountry roads, 6 miles of railroad tracks, a high pressure gas transmission pipeline and high voltage power line. The interstate is a major shipping route for goods between Mexico and the United States. Approximately 550 trucks per day ship hazardous materials produce and manufactured goods via the I-19 roadway. The railroad is a major north-south conduit for approximately 275,000 tons of hazardous materials annually. Many Wildland and residential areas are only accessible by 4-wheeled drive vehicles and beyond effective hose lay distance from the nearest paved or good unpaved roadway. The volunteers of EHVFD utilize five apparatus to provide fire suppression, pre-hospital EMS and rescue services. Currently the ISO rating within 26 square miles is 9/9. When this project is completed, EHVFD will seek a new ISO rating of 7/8 (or lower) within 26 square miles. EHVFD has an automatic aid agreement with one fire department and standard mutual aid agreements with three other adjacent fire departments.
